Hey there, I’m Emily Carter!
I’m a 32-year-old home decor obsessive, small-space survivor, and the voice behind Apartment Glow Up. I live in Austin, Texas, with my rescue cat Oliver and an embarrassing number of throw pillows.
A few years ago, I moved into my first solo apartment. It was 480 square feet of beige walls, fluorescent lighting, and zero personality. My budget was tight, my landlord had a strict “no holes in the walls” policy, and I had absolutely no idea where to start. So I did what any reasonable person would do — I spent three weeks spiraling through Pinterest at 2 a.m., impulse-bought a rug that was way too small, and cried a little when my gallery wall command strips gave up on life.
But somewhere between the trial and error (heavy on the error), something clicked. I started figuring out what actually works in real apartments, on real budgets, for real people who don’t have a design degree or a renovation fund. The small wins added up — a $30 mirror that made my hallway look twice as wide, a paint trick that transformed my bathroom over a weekend, a shelf arrangement that finally made my living room feel like mine.
Friends started asking for advice. Then their friends. I kept a running notes app full of tips, product links, and ideas I’d tested myself. Eventually, I thought: why not share this with everyone?
That’s how Apartment Glow Up was born.

My Design Philosophy
I believe your home should make you feel something when you walk through the door. Not stressed, not overwhelmed — just genuinely happy to be there. Good design isn’t about having the biggest budget or the trendiest furniture. It’s about being intentional with what you have and making choices that reflect who you are.
Every idea I share here is something I’ve either tried myself, helped a friend pull off, or thoroughly researched to make sure it’s actually doable. No $5,000 “budget” makeovers. No advice that only works if you own your home. Just practical, tested ideas for real life.
A Note on How I Create Content
I do use AI tools to help with research and drafting — I’m one person running this blog alongside a full-time job, and these tools help me publish consistently without sacrificing quality. But every single post goes through my hands before it goes live. The voice, the opinions, the recommendations — those are all me. If I wouldn’t put it in my own apartment, it’s not going on this blog.
